Xenical is used to help obese people who fit certain weight and height requirements lose weight and maintain weight loss. Xenical works in your intestines, where it blocks some of the fat you eat from being absorbed. This undigested fat is then eliminated in your bowel movements. Use Xenical together with a reduced-calorie diet. The weight management effects of Xenical continue only as long as you are taking it.

What is Xenical?

Xenical is an oral prescription weight-loss medication used to help obese people lose weight and keep these weight off. Xenical works in your intestines where it blocks some of the fats you eat from being absorbed. This undigested fat is then eliminated in your bowel movements. Xenical should be used together with a reduced-calorie diet that your doctor shall recommend.

How does Xenical Work?

If you eat an excess amount of fat or calories, the excess is stored by the body as fat resulting in weight gain. When you eat fat, your body breaks it down into its simplest form so that it can be absorbed. Enzymes in your intestinal tracts called lipases help digest or break down fat. When you take xenical with meals xenical attaches to the lipases and blocks them from breaking down some of the fats you have eaten. The undigested fat can not be absorbed and is eliminated in your bowel movements.

Precautions

• Your daily intake of fat should be evenly divided over 3 main meals.
• Xenical can decrease the absorption some fat-soluble vitamins and beta-carotene. Therefore when being treated with Xenical, take a multivitamin supplement that contains vitamins D, E, K, and beta-carotene.?Take your multivitamin once a day at least 2 hours before or after taking Xenical, such as bedtime.
• Review all medications that you are taking with your health care provider, including those that you take without a prescription. If you are taking cyclosporine you may have to be monitored more closely.
• If you are diabetic, Xenical may affect your blood sugar control. See your doctor regularly for monitoring and treatment adjustments.

Side Effects

There are some possible side effects of taking xenical.

• Oily spotting
• Gas with discharge
• Urgent need to have a bowel movement
• Oily or fatty stools
• Oily discharge
• Increased number of bowel movements
• Inability to control bowel movements

How should you take Xenical?

Xenical is taken by mouth and swallowed with a drink of liquid. Follow the directions on the prescription label. You can take Xenical with each main meal that contains about 30% of the calories from fat. Or you can take the capsule one hour after the meal. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. If you occasionally miss a meal or have a meal without fat, you can omit that dose of Xenical. Doses greater than 120 mg three times per day have not been shown to increase weight loss.

You should use Xenical with a reduced-calorie diet that contains no more than about 30% of the calories from fat. Divide your daily intake of fat, carbohydrates, and protein evenly over your 3 main meals. You should try to follow a healthy eating plan as prescribed by your doctor such as the one developed by the American Heart Association. Following this eating plan can help reduce the possible GI side effects from Xenical.

Storage

• Keep the medicine out of the reach of children in a container so that small children cannot open.
• Storage at 25[0] C (77[0] F) is preferred. You may store at 15[0] to 30[0] C (59[0] to 86[0] F). Protect from moisture.

Keep container tightly closed.Throw away any unused medicine after the expiry date.
